Mexico plans to discuss with Russia on tractor, fertiliser, grain imports

At the APEC Finance Ministers meeting on August 30 in Kazan, Mexican authorities plan to discuss importing tractors, fertilisers, and grain from Russia, Francisco Javier Mayorga Castaneda, Mexico's secretary of agriculture, said on Tuesday (May 15).

According to Mayorga, Mexico purchases up to four million tonnes of fertilisers, the majority of which are produced in Russia but sold by intermediaries from Switzerland or Israel. "My guess is that it would be easier to establish direct contacts between fertiliser exporters and our buyers," he added.

Mayorga said that negotiations regarding grain the imports began at a meeting with Russian Agriculture Minister Yelena Skrynnik. "The Russian grain market is quite isolated; it is regulated by the government with the participation of private companies. As a result, we still do not know who to hold further negotiations with," he said.
